OPERATION: If I Build It, They Will Grow

I know, I know...why even start a blog if I can't manage to write in the damn thing? While that is a compelling point...I do have shit to say about this life-consuming undertaking and it seems I've finally found a few minutes during which to let my thoughts flow. While I'm not sure where the tradition originated or why, I just know that it exists- all truly great (which here means cultivated with great care and enthusiasm) gardens have names, like ranches, yachts, or rifles. As is the case with conjuring titles or naming anything, it is my belief that one should never force a name upon anything, no matter how small. All truly fitting names come naturally, usually as they are earned in some fashion. My puppies remain nameless until the instant the proverbial light bulb goes off and it  comes blurting out of my mouth. From that point forth, "It" is permanent and might as well be made of solid gold that sticks like solid glue....That moment came this morning for...

Friday Afternoon Gardening

Per Ms. Sheila- the pecan trees are blooming and that can only mean one thing... we won't be freezing again until fall...if ever. heh. With that go-ahead, I've been getting all of the plants which survived the winter with me situated outside, repotted if necessary, you know- the works. & this is by far the quickest means of taking notes... I have VERY green thumbs when it comes to growing Arrowhead Vines (Synogonium) . I currently have a regular type growing in a hanging planter, a very happy 'Pink Allusion' variety overgrowing its modest container, and two cuttings rooted in water- one several times the size of the other. Since the hanging basket is comparatively sparse, I plan to add the rooted cuttings to it as a way to fill out the space.  When fall of 2017 was fast approaching, I took a cutting from the Coleus I had grown from a leaf cutting the Spring prior. I had it rooting in water since then. I trimmed off the lowermost leaves and planted in a fairly s...

Miracle on Starter Tray #2...?

Literally not quite sure how this is feasibly happening buuuutttttt.... [I'll take the wins where I can get 'em. Heh] Seed Starter Tray #2 was the tray that became the virtual battleground, the boxing ring...the fucking octagon I suppose...in my 2019 war with my gardening arch nemesis. It was while I was sowing my seeds into that tray #2 that I spotted they who shall not be named. As is the only smart course of action as common sense has it, I ceased my sowing operation in that soil and made my best effort to remove the seeds I had already placed so as to conserve my supply and commenced OPERATION: ERASE THE GNAT 2K19 (2.0) by unleashed a blitzkrieg of fungicides and pinterest trending DIY insecticides. You know...those state-of-the-art weapons I have in my arsenal. Naturally, I abandoned this tray on the porch in hopes that our recent bone-chilling freeze would off the bastards and it looked like I succeeded every time I happened to glance at it whilst taking Spectre out to...

If it wasn't for bad luck....

I wouldn't have no luck at all... Remember when I said that spring was over and summer was upon us... well the Louisiana asylum-caliber crazy climate survey says that was a damn  lie. There are very very  few instances in my life when I can say this but, " Thank freaking god for narcolepsy!" I had been proverbially kicking myself for literally sleeping on starting the last half of my indoor germ seeds sowing, not to mention the direct outdoor sows until like 3 days ago when a storm front rolled through and turned back the clock and thermostat and sent us straight back into the throes of winter. As winter as we ever get...it literally froze night before last. SO I thank my faulty brain for allowing me to sleep through what would have been an immensely frustrating mistake of a headache. In fact, I was talking to C about my forthcoming gardening to knock out and mentioned how many gardening enthusiasts in our area must have been tearing their hair out in disbelief. I mea...

Here Resides My Green Thumb's  [& occasionally my tough girl muscles]  To Do List... Finish sowing the remainder of the INDOOR GERMINATION seeds Finish raking the front/side yards Compile the debris from raking & apply in thick layer over areas of yard that plan on converting to garden beds/rows [to kill grass/weeds] Move any debris not used for the above task to the ditches, to burn off Weed areas cleared by raking-use organic solutions to kill if needed. Remove ALL Monkey Grass bulbs and roots completely . Check pallets for rot, discard if present Pallet previously underneath the raised bed MUST BE TRASHED. Check neighborhood businesses for stash of new pallets if needed. Seal/weatherproof all pallets to be used in garden. Dump contents of compost bin. Determine where shelving unit currently on porch is best utilized- side porch? Have C mount a hook for the hose on the side of the house per his preference. Set-up supplies for layer cloning the b...

Sowing Lessons

I know, I know...I live in Southern Louisiana...a solid hardiness zone 8. I should have done been sowing my seeds. Did I mention I have narcolepsy?? I feel like I did a pretty good job with timing considering I beat March to the punch. Also, I'm trying to go BIG with my garden this year. I'm talkin' extra produce to the point of necessitating a booth at the local farmer's market. I want to plan big and succeed big. MUCH growth, SUCH production. Therefore, I feel it goes without saying [but I'll say it anyway because blog...] that this requires an enormous amount of foresight and organization. All that would be just fine if I was an expert but I am very far from those credentials and I have NO ONE to model my methods after. It's a good  GREAT thing that I am hopelessly addicted to reading and researching. If I am unsure of something, I have to find a credible source, write it down [because the damn printer is broken as printers are wont to be...], and make sure t...
